View keyed in black in over pencil, left to right, from 1 to 11, referring to a separate JRR key inscribed in ink on former mat (l.l. & l.r. part of mat, bearing inscribed key, now in Accession File) Key: . 1 Skenk & Hounsell's premises now owned and occupied by Bowring Bros. Ltd. 2 Newman & Co's premises. Exporters of "Newman's Port Wine". 3-4. Captured privateers and Riff Pirates. 5. Fort Townsend. 6-6.British Warships. 7. North side, Harbour of St. John’s, site of city proper. 8. British Privateers. 9. South side, Harbour of St John’s, waterfront occupied by seal oil manufactories, etc. 10. Hillock on which was built a fort. now used as storm Signal Station. 11. Gibbet Hill and Gibbet.
