In past times the brook from the rattle to the shore was used to power sawmills.
The pond has a large protruding point, named Pinsent's Point, that disguises how large it actually is when seen from the main pathway. The origins of the pond's name, and the name of the point are currently unknown.
At one time, in the 70s and/or 80s, the pond was considered as a water supply for both Apsey Brook and Snook's Harbour, but plans and/or funding never came to fruition.
